This historic 1912 farmhouse located in the beautiful Elk River Valley rests on 35 lush pasture and hay producing acres, with Smith Creek running the length of the property, it is surrounded by high mountain cattle ranches, but just a 20 minute scenic drive along the Elk River to Colorado's world renowned Steamboat Springs Ski Resort.
The home was built by a local German craftsman for a prominent Steamboat family and it had the distinction of being the first house in the valley to have indoor plumbing. The lady of the house served daily meals in the large dining room to the ranch hands working for the family. The house was moved in 1988, approximately 6 miles west to the 35 acre parcel on Smith Creek and seated on a new full concrete basement foundation. The location offers privacy and serenity, a wonderful getaway from the hustle and bustle of town.
The house has a total of 6 bedrooms and 2 baths. Living room with gas fireplace, large formal dining room, galley style kitchen with eating area, and one bedroom are on the first floor. The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms, one of which could easily be converted to a large bathroom since the preliminary plumbing work has been done. The original 2 story floor plan is still intact, it is bright and open with stunning views to be enjoyed from the large windows in every room. The house has been completely restored and redecorated in a sophisticated country style, with rustic wide pine plank wood floors. The newly finished 900 sq.ft. basement can be used as guest quarters or kids' hangout, it has kitchenette, bath, bedroom and large living area with gas stove.
The beautiful circa 1898 barn on the property has a unique history, it was also moved from a location on a mountain just to the west, called Pilots Knob where it was used near a turn of the century sawmill. After being moved in 1938 it became home to the mare, Bonnie, who produced one of the first champions of the Quarterhorse breed in Colorado. The barn was awarded "Historical Barn" status by "Historical Routt County" in 1996 and remains intact with its bronze plaque over the entrance.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado - "Ski Town USA"
Elevation 6992 feet
Population 11,000
The historical significance of the area includes major coal mining facilities, moving coal by rail to the western and midwest states, sheep and cattle ranching, farming and skiing! The valley's rich history is exhibited throughout "The Tread Of Pioneers" museum located in downtown Steamboat Springs. It starts with the Ute Indians who populated the area before the first pioneers arrived in 1875 to settle in this beautiful valley. Summers were sublime in this rich and fertile valley, but in the winter, skiing was a way of life for children and adults with the valley blanketed in 3 to 4 feet of snow. Kids went to school on skis almost twice the size of conventional skis today. In 1913 Norwegian Carl Howelson came to Steamboat and introduced ski jumping and skiing as recreation. Skiing became so popular it drew crowds of people traveling by train to watch the events and also to enjoy the health benefits of the many hot springs, for which Steamboat was known. Today Steamboat is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. Besides the skiing, there are so many activities to enjoy year around, such as 6 week ProRodeo circuit in summer and 4 day Winter Carnival events in winter. The down to earth Steamboat, however, is still a ranching town with a charming western feel, with ranching activities a part of every day life.
